About Me

My name is Natalie Brierley. I am a youth worker in Cheshire and have been working with children and adults with learning disabilities/difficulties for four years and i love my job. I love seeing children learn and develop their skills and gain independance.

In my job i see and learn something new every day. Social care and youth work gives me challeneges that i wouldn't have in any other job and that means the world to me. Policies and services are always advancing and chnaging and i love keeping up to date with the changes.

I specialise most in autism and ADHD but also work in other areas and i hope to expand my experience. I have recently started to learn British Sign Language (BSL) and i am also learning Makaton. Communication can be seen as a big barrier and cause inequality. Many schools are teaching children basic sign language and this is so inspiring.

I am a firm believer in equality for all no matter of age, race, religion or disability and i try to promote this through my daily activities. The children in the youth group i work at also carry this message. Sadly the prejudice that is in society against those who aren't seen as 'normal' is passed down form generation to generation. Teaching this to the younger generation now will break the chain and hopefully change things in the future.

Often the government aren't open to say what you are truly able to claim either for your own disability or for a relatives. For example if you have mobility difficulties did you know you can have your car tax paid for? This is a well hidden piece of information that i have recently learnt myself. I am always on the hunt for services, funding and help for those who need it who may not know the services exist. Often the government make it very hard to claim money which puts people off and it shouldn't be this way!

If you have any questions about funding or advice feel free to look at the contact page for ways to contact me. Although i am based in Cheshire i aim to help people where ever you live. I have connections with people in various services who can always point me in the right direction or in a place i may not have thought to look.
